Why Cinnamon Essential Oil, Bark and Leaf Oils

Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil, and for that matter Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil contain high levels of cinnamaldehyde; which irritates the skin, so this oil is another one that should never be used neat on the skin, pregnant and breast feeding women should avoid it. Safely used on the skin: 1 drop to 100ml of carrier oil.

But just as the cinnamaldehyde can irritate it also bears many gifts, it’s an antimicrobial fighting bacterial growth. Cinnamaldehyde has been found to be of use inhibiting the spread of cancer cells and growth of tumours, specifically prostate, lung and breast cancer*

Bark over Leaf:

Cinnamon Leaf is high in eugenol, this makes it, when diluted with a carrier oil, a great pain reliever, analgesic.

Cinnamon Bark is substantially more expensive than cinnamon leaf and has been considered to be the more potent but recent research has shown that the active ingredient, cinnamaldehyde is present to the same extent in both the Bark and Leaf oils. They both have antioxidant qualities.

Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil has been shown to ease depression and reduce stress and relax the body enough so as to increase the libido, a few drops can relieve cystitis if used in a sitz bath, it is a great deterrent to mosquitoes and diluted with carrier oil, it can be used in a massage oil to relieve cramps.

Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil is, because of its anti-inflammatory properties a fine topical pain killer, it is powerful and can be utilized as an antifungal and anti-viral agent.

When it comes to scent and strength, the Bark essential oil is surprise surprise more earthy and woody, the leaf essential oil; lighter in fragrance. The Bark Oil needs to be handled with a little more care as it is more of an irritant to the skin and mucous membranes.

Both oils blend well with Benzoin, Frankincense, Ginger, Grapefruit, Lavender, Mandarin, Orange, Pine, Rosemary, Thyme and Ylang Ylang.

Oh and FYI its botanical name is Cinnamomum zeylanicum

Geranium Essential Oil: Creating a sense of security and stability.

Why Geranium Essential Oil?

Well, interestingly; it,s simultaneously’ a sedative and an uplifting oil!

According to Salvatore Battaglia, The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy (The International centre of Holistic Aromatherapy Publications, 2016)  pg. 207; Geranium Essential Oil, in Chinese medicine is cooling and moist, it clears heat and has the ability to strengthen the flow of Qi, it is therefore able to calm the mind, relax the body, ease frustration and irritability.

Further referencing this book, Geranium Essential Oil is ideal for the A type personality, the workaholic, perfectionist type or the person who has forgotten imagination, intuition and the sensory experience.

It is very helpful when hungover or dealing with jetlag. We also suggest using Geranium for a get together with friends, especially when you are bringing in new friends and you want them to feel at home.
If you have the jitters, a few drops on a tissue kept close by will dispel any nervousness when going into a meeting, job interview, etc.

It is great for open wounds, and acne for that matter, as it is an anti-microbial (anti-bacterial is a form of an anti-microbial,) which works to prevent bacteria growth. Due to Geranium Essential Oils’ haemostatic and astringent anti-inflammatory qualities, it contracts blood vessels and speeds up the coagulation of blood, speeding up the healing of wounds.

Geranium Essential Oils works particularly well for women, both as a calming salve psychologically and on a hormonal level, balancing fluctuating hormone levels. It is fabulous for PMS, peri-menopausal and menopausal women.

There is some evidence to support Geranium’s use in anti-aging products,  as it has the ability to repair collagen and tighten the skin, all which minimize the visible signs of aging.

When it comes to the skin, Geranium Essential Oil is helpful when dealing with other skin conditions including, as mentioned, Acne, Eczema and Ketosis Pilaris.

You can use the Hydrolat (Geranium Water) spray as a natural insect repellent ( mozzies really hate it). The Spray is also excellent when experiencing hot flushes.

Why Clove Essential Oil?

Clove Essential Oil is a tricky one…

While it’s advised to NEVER be used neat on the skin, especially for pregnant women because of the safrol it contains, it still has some amazing uses.

When taken, Clove Bud lowers blood sugar levels, improves digestion, reduces acidity, can lower cholesterol levels, maintain oral hygiene and helps relieve congested chest and sinuses.

For our purposes I’ll be addressing Clove Bud as an Essential Oil.

It has quite a history; it was traded during the Middle Ages and was highly prized as it was thought to prevent the continued spread of the bubonic plague due to its antibacterial properties.

Because it has a mild analgesic effect, it’s been used for centuries to ease a toothache and can be very handy to pop a couple of drops on a cotton bud and hold on the tooth before you can get to the dentist.

Clove contains a large amount of Eugenol, a muscle relaxant and stress reliever, so it is a great one to have in the bath and because of its aphrodisiac qualities; it’s a must for burning in the bedroom.

Clove contains anti-inflammatory properties which, along with its ability to kill bacteria can make an excellent additive to home-made masks to get rid of pimples and blemishes.
(Try one drop mixed with a tablespoon of honey and 2 teaspoons of lemon, then leave on face for 20 minutes).

As an antimicrobial, clove bud essential oil is a great addition to natural cleaning products.

Diluted with a carrier oil, it can be applied to the feet as an antifungal treatment of athlete’s foot or nail fungus.

Clove Oil has shown in studies to have antiviral qualities and could have the ability to fight certain viruses.

Clove Bud essential oil blends well with Basil, Bergamot, Cinnamon Bark, Clary Sage, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Orange, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary and Ylang Ylang.

We have used Clove Bud in our products:
Let’s Get it On Essential Oil Blend, Cleopatra Moisturizing Goat’s Milk Bath Soak and Detox Bath Soak, Anti-Viral Essential Oil Blend, Anti-Viral Hand Soap, Detox Bath Soak
